Welcome to Own Day.
Life can be busy. Calendars fill up, to-do lists grow longer, and it’s easy to spend each day responding to whatever demands your attention next. Yet even on our busiest days, the future we hope to create is shaped by the choices we make along the way.
Own Day helps you take small, intentional actions each day that move you closer to the life you want to live. Over time, those actions become visible progress, and meaningful change begins to take shape.
Downloading and Installing Own Day
Download Own Day on your Android phone via Play Store or iPhone using the App Store link.
Your First Five Minutes
Getting started takes only a few minutes.
Optional: Find your starting point. On the home page, select Learn More, then choose Find Your Starting Point. This short reflection helps you consider which parts of life—such as relationships, growth, health, or money—may deserve more attention. These can become your chosen Life Areas in Own Day. You can skip this step and return to it later from Settings and proceed to directly create your account using the Create Account option on the homepage.
Create your account and complete onboarding. During onboarding, you will:
Choose one or two Life Areas: the parts of life you would like to improve.
Add a few Foundational Habits: recurring practices like walking or exercise you would like to build.
Add Priority Actions: one-time actions that move you forward.
Create personal Rewards to celebrate your progress.
You can skip some or all of these steps and return to them later from Settings.
3. Plan actions for your first day. Go to Today and choose what belongs in this day. Select the Foundational Habits you would like to practice and any Priority Actions you would like to complete. We recommend beginning with one in each category when you are starting out.
4. Take your first intentional step. Complete your intentions whenever they fit naturally into your day, then check them off in Own Day. Tomorrow, return to Today and repeat the process. Spending even two to five minutes each day choosing your intentions can help you build a more intentional way of living. Try connecting Own Day to a moment already built into your day, such as your morning coffee or afternoon break. New routines can be difficult to establish, but pairing Own Day with an existing habit can make it easier to use consistently and naturally. Invite up to five friends who can join you in this journey and encourage each other along the way. You can see if your friends have made any plans for the day, if they have completed their planned actions or are in progress and what is the number of days they have been consistently active. Your friends can see your status and react to your progress. Your specific plans and activities are always confidential.
The rest of this guide explains each part of Own Day in more detail and shares a few recommendations to help you get the most from your experience.
-
Own Day is built around a simple idea: a better life is created through daily action.
Everything in the app follows the same gentle rhythm.
You begin by choosing the areas of life that matter most to you. From there, you create recurring habits that support those areas and one-time actions that move you forward. Each day, you decide which intentions deserve your attention, complete them in whatever order works for your life, and reflect on your progress over time.
You can invite a small group of friends to be part of your journey and to share their own progress with you through Own Day’s Circle feature. There are no perfect days. There are only opportunities to keep moving forward.
-
Life Areas represent the parts of your life you want to intentionally develop.
For one person that may be health and peace of mind. For another it might be relationships, career, learning, finances, or creativity.
Your Life Areas provide direction. They help ensure the actions you choose each day contribute to the life you're trying to build, rather than simply reacting to whatever feels most urgent.
As your life changes, your Life Areas can change too.
Our recommendation
When you're getting started, choose one or two Life Areas rather than trying to improve every part of your life at once. Focusing your attention makes it easier to build momentum, and you can always add or change your Life Areas as your priorities evolve.
Each Life Area includes a collection of ideas for Foundational Habits and Priority Actions to help you make progress in that area. Think of these as starting point and feel free to adapt, modify or create your own to fit your goals and circumstances. -
Foundational Habits are recurring practices that support your future self.
They are the actions you hope to repeat over time because of the person they help you become.
Walking each morning. Reading before bed. Practicing gratitude. Drinking more water. Calling family each week. Spending time learning a new skill.
Unlike many habit trackers, Own Day doesn't expect every habit to be completed every day. However your Foundational Habits remain available, and each day you choose the ones that make sense for today.
This keeps your day intentional instead of overwhelming.
Our recommendation
Start with one recurring habit that you genuinely want to build. Choose something realistic enough that you can return to consistently. As it becomes part of your routine, gradually introduce another Foundational Habit.
Small, sustainable habits are far more powerful than ambitious routines that are difficult to maintain.
-
Not everything you do becomes a habit. Some actions simply need to happen once.
Booking a doctor's appointment, finishing that plan for your next vacation or scheduling lunch with a friend you haven’t connected with in a while are all examples of one time actions that move your life forward.
While Foundational Habits help shape the person you're becoming, Priority Actions help you take one meaningful step at a time.
Together, they create a balanced approach to intentional living.
Our recommendation
Start with one meaningful Priority Action each day. Choosing a single action that moves an important goal forward is often more valuable than checking off a long list of smaller tasks. As using Own Day becomes part of your routine, you can gradually take on more when it feels right. -
Foundational Habits are things you want to return to regularly. Think of these as routines you may want to add to your calendar again and again.
Priority Actions are things you want to focus on or get done but may not need to repeat. The two can overlap. If something starts as a Priority Action and you find yourself wanting to do it regularly, it may make more sense as a Foundational Habit. Use whichever helps you plan your day most naturally.
For example, an annual health check could be saved as a Priority Action because you only need to do it once a year—you can simply add it when the time comes. But if you like having it saved and available to schedule again each year, you could make it a Foundational Habit instead.Similarly, watching a sunset might be a one-time Priority Action on a particular day, or a Foundational Habit if it’s something you want to make space for regularly.
The key idea: they aren’t rigid categories. Choose based on how you want to use the action.

Most of us already have busy calendars filled with meetings, appointments, responsibilities, and commitments. Own Day isn't designed to replace your calendar—it works alongside it.
Each day, take a moment to pause and ask yourself one simple question:
What deserves my attention today?
Consider the Life Areas you've chosen and think about the life you're trying to build. Which recurring habits will support that journey today? Is there a one-time action that would move an important goal forward?
Your Foundational Habits will often remain similar for weeks or even months as you build lasting habits. Your Priority Actions, on the other hand, naturally change from day to day as new opportunities, responsibilities, and goals arise.
Own Day asks you to choose your activities each day so you can deliberately decide how you want to create that day. It isn't designed as a traditional habit tracker—your Foundations stay available, but you choose when they belong in Today’s Plan.
Choose the intentions that feel most important today. Some days that may be one Foundation and one Priority. Other days you may choose several. There is no perfect number—only a day that feels realistic and intentional.
If one of your intentions deserves dedicated time, tap Add to Calendar. This opens your device's calendar so you can schedule it alongside the commitments you already have. Your calendar continues to manage your schedule, while Own Day helps you decide what belongs in it.
Complete your intentions whenever they naturally fit into your day. Life is rarely predictable, and plans often change. Own Day is designed to work with that reality rather than against it.
Our recommendation
Start with one Foundational Habit and one meaningful Priority Action each day. Building a simple, sustainable routine is more valuable than creating an ambitious plan that's difficult to follow. As using Own Day becomes part of your life, you can gradually add more intentions when it feels right.
-
Your Circle is a small group of people who can support and encourage one another. Members can see when you've made progress on your daily plan and celebrate your consistency with simple reactions but they never see the details of your habits, priorities, or journal entries. Think of it as gentle accountability, not social media.
To invite someone, simply send them an invitation from the Circle screen. You can remove members from your Circle at any time if your support network changes.
We recommend starting with one trusted friend or family member who is also working toward positive change. As your Circle grows naturally, you can invite additional people whenever it feels right. -
The Reflection Journal gives you a dedicated space to pause and capture your thoughts at the end of each day. You can reflect on what went well, what was challenging, what you learned, or simply how you're feeling. Over time, your reflections become a personal record of your journey, helping you notice patterns, celebrate progress, and learn from both good days and difficult ones.
You can revisit all of your past journal entries at any time from the Progress tab, making it easy to look back on your journey and see how far you've come. If you'd like to keep a personal copy, you can also download your journal entries whenever you need.
There is no right or wrong way to use your journal. Some days you may write a few words, while other days you may have more to say. The important thing is taking a moment to reflect.
-
Meaningful change rarely happens overnight.
The Progress section helps you look beyond a single day and see the bigger picture. As your completed intentions accumulate, you'll begin to notice patterns and better understand the habits that are helping you move forward.
To help you reflect, Own Day also lets you review your last seven days in detail. Looking back at individual days often reveals patterns that aren't obvious in the moment—whether you've been consistently making time for exercise, neglecting a particular Focus Area, or building momentum in a new habit.
Each week, Own Day also provides a Weekly Reflection that brings together your activity from the previous seven days. Rather than simply summarising statistics, it helps you recognise what's working well, identify opportunities for improvement, and celebrate the progress you've made. The more thoughtfully you use Own Day throughout the week, the more meaningful your Weekly Reflection becomes.
Our recommendation
Progress isn't measured by perfection. It's measured by continuing to show up.
Return to your Progress regularly—not to judge yourself, but to learn from your experience. Review your recent days, celebrate what's working, and look for small adjustments rather than dramatic changes. If you've been struggling to complete your daily intentions, consider creating a simple ritual around Own Day. Spending a few minutes at the same time each day—perhaps after breakfast, before starting work, or in the evening—can make setting intentions feel natural and sustainable.
-
Rewards
Progress deserves to be celebrated.
Own Day encourages you to create your own rewards—large or small—that motivate and inspire you along the way. A reward might be as simple as enjoying your favourite coffee, taking an afternoon to yourself, buying a new book, or planning a weekend getaway. The best rewards are the ones that feel personally meaningful to you.
You can create and manage your rewards during your initial setup or at any time from Settings. As your goals and interests evolve, your rewards can evolve with them.
Rather than awarding rewards automatically, Own Day invites you to decide when you've earned them. This keeps the experience personal and encourages you to pause, reflect, and appreciate the progress you've made.
You'll also notice that many milestones in Own Day are linked to setting intentions rather than simply completing them. Choosing what matters each day is a meaningful habit in itself. Before lasting change becomes automatic, it first becomes intentional.
For the same reason, streaks celebrate the consistency of returning to Own Day and making intentional choices. While completing your intentions is always the goal, life is rarely perfect. A busy week, unexpected events, or changing priorities shouldn't erase the habit of reflecting and beginning again.
Over time, you'll discover that the simple practice of returning each day is one of the most valuable habits you can build.
Our recommendation
Create a small collection of rewards that genuinely motivate you and look forward to earning them. They don't need to be expensive or elaborate—often the most meaningful rewards are simple moments that bring you joy. Celebrate your progress regularly, even when the journey isn't perfect.
-

Your goals will naturally change over time. We encourage you to revisit your Life Areas and Rewards every few months to make sure they still reflect what matters most to you. Small updates can help keep your daily intentions meaningful and aligned with the life you're trying to build.
If notifications aren't working for your routine, don't hesitate to adjust them. The best reminder is the one you'll actually pay attention to.

Your Frequently Asked Questions, Answered
-
Own Day is a daily intentional living app that helps you focus on what matters most. It brings together recurring habits, meaningful one-time actions, daily intention setting, reflection, and rewards to help you design a better life through daily action.
-
Own Day is available for anyone to download on Apple App Store or Android Play Store.
-
Own Day was designed to be a companion throughout your day, not another browser tab.
The moments that matter, setting your intentions in the morning, reviewing your progress, adding an intention to your calendar, or reflecting before bed, often happen when you're away from your desk. A mobile app makes it easy to carry Own Day with you wherever life takes you.
Building a great mobile experience also allows us to focus our efforts on doing one thing exceptionally well rather than spreading ourselves across multiple platforms too early.
As Own Day grows, we'll continue listening to our community and thoughtfully explore additional ways to access the experience.

Your calendar is one of the best tools for managing appointments, meetings, and commitments. If it already helps you consistently make time for the things that matter most, you may not need another tool.
For many of us, though, life moves quickly. We intend to exercise more, read more, spend time with family, learn a new skill, or simply pause and reflect but those intentions often get pushed aside by whatever feels most urgent.
Own Day was created for those moments.
It gives you a dedicated place to step back from the demands of your schedule and ask a simple question:
What deserves my attention today?
By helping you choose intentional actions, build meaningful habits, and reflect on your progress over time, Own Day complements your calendar rather than replacing it.
Your calendar manages your time. Own Day helps you shape your life.

Yes. Own Day is informed by decades of research in behavioral science, psychology, goal achievement, and habit formation. It brings together several well-established principles that can help people turn meaningful intentions into consistent action.
One challenge researchers have studied extensively is the intention–behaviour gap: deciding that something matters does not always mean we follow through. A major meta-analysis of 94 independent tests found that forming specific plans about when, where, and how to act had a medium-to-large positive effect on goal attainment.¹
This distinction matters because a calendar generally organises commitments that have already been made. It does not usually help those commitments originate. Unless we deliberately make space to consider our health, relationships, learning, finances, peace of mind, or personal growth, those important but non-urgent parts of life can remain intentions rather than becoming part of our days.
Own Day creates a place to pause and ask:
What small actions today will help me build the life I want tomorrow?
It then helps you connect that reflection to daily action through several research-informed principles:
Meaningful goal setting. Research developed over more than 35 years found that clear, specific goals generally guide attention and effort more effectively than vague instructions simply to “do your best.”²
Action planning. Turning a goal into a specific action and considering when and how it will happen can help bridge the gap between intention and follow-through.¹
Progress monitoring. A meta-analysis of 138 randomized studies involving 19,951 participants found that interventions prompting people to monitor their progress increased both progress monitoring and goal attainment.³
Habit formation through repetition. In a real-world study, 96 participants repeated a chosen behaviour in a consistent context over 12 weeks. Automaticity increased gradually with repetition, although the time required varied considerably between people and behaviours.⁴
Reflection and recognition. Own Day encourages you to reflect on your day, notice progress over days and weeks, and choose personally meaningful rewards. These features are designed to support continued engagement rather than perfect performance.
You will also notice that Own Day recognizes setting intentions, not only completing them. That is a deliberate design choice. The research does not establish that rewarding intention-setting alone guarantees behavior change. Rather, it shows that identifying a goal, making a plan, repeatedly returning attention to it, and monitoring progress are important parts of moving from intention to action. Own Day rewards that daily practice while still treating completion as the outcome you are working toward.
No app can create lasting change on its own. Own Day provides a structure for regularly considering the life you want to build, choosing actions that support it, and seeing how those choices accumulate over time.

We believe that while we can't control everything life brings our way, we can choose how we respond to each day.
Owning your day doesn't mean being productive every minute or accomplishing everything on your list. It means making intentional choices about what matters most, taking meaningful action, and recognising that small daily decisions shape the life you build over time.
Every day is a new opportunity to own your day.
-
Foundational Habits are recurring habits that support the person you're becoming. They remain available every day, allowing you to intentionally choose the ones that matter most for today. From a practical perspective this means if you completed your exercise one day, you can still come back and choose it again the next day it doesn’t go away as an option.
Priority Actions are meaningful one-time actions that move an important goal forward. Once completed, they're removed from your active list. For example if you booked a medical appointment for a health check up and marked it as done, you won’t see it as a option in your saved priority actions to pick from while planning the next day.
Together, these help you balance long-term growth with meaningful progress.
-
They can be. If it’s something you want to do regularly and would like to have available to add to your calendar again and again, save it as a Foundation.
If it’s something you want to focus on or get done without necessarily repeating it regularly, save it as a Priority.
There’s no need to overthink it — use whichever feels most useful for how you plan your day.
-
Own Day is designed to help you choose deliberately how you want to create each day, rather than automatically carrying the same activities forward for a week or month.
Your priorities can change from one day to the next, so choosing what belongs in Today’s Plan gives you a chance to decide what matters today.
Own Day also isn’t meant to be a traditional habit tracker. Foundational Habits give you a set of activities you can return to regularly, but you decide when they belong in your day rather than having the app automatically assign them.
-
We recommend starting with one or two Life Areas. It's often easier to build momentum by concentrating on a few important areas rather than trying to improve everything at once.
As your life changes, your Life Areas can change too.
-
You can have up to three Life Areas selected at a time. If you'd like to focus on a different area, simply deselect one of your current Life Areas and select another.
Don't worry—any Foundational Habits, Priority Actions, and progress you've created in a Life Area are saved. Nothing is deleted when you remove a Life Area from your active selection. When you create your plan for the day all your saved intentions across old and new Life Areas will be shown for selection.
We intentionally limit active Life Areas to three because we found trying to improve every part of your life at once can quickly become overwhelming. Focusing on just a few areas at a time makes it easier to build consistent habits, make meaningful progress, and create a daily plan that's realistic to follow.
-
There is no perfect number.
If you're new to Own Day, we recommend starting with one Foundational Habit and one meaningful Priority Action each day. As using Own Day becomes part of your routine, you can gradually add more intentions when it feels right.
The goal isn't to do more. It's to choose what matters most.
-
Yes.
If an intention deserves dedicated time, simply select Add to Calendar. Own Day will open your device's calendar so you can schedule it alongside your existing commitments.
Not every intention needs to be scheduled. Many naturally fit into your day, while others benefit from having dedicated time.
-
Own Day is built on the belief that meaningful change begins with intention.
Taking a few moments each day to pause, reflect, and decide what truly matters is a powerful habit in its own right. Before consistent action becomes automatic, it first becomes intentional.
Completing your intentions is always the goal, but life isn't always predictable. Meetings run late, plans change, and unexpected responsibilities arise. We don't believe one difficult day should erase the habit of returning to your intentions.
By recognising the practice of setting intentions, Own Day encourages you to keep showing up. Over time, that consistency creates the foundation for lasting progress.
-
The most meaningful rewards are personal.
Own Day encourages you to create rewards that genuinely motivate and inspire you, whether that's enjoying your favourite coffee, buying a new book, taking a day trip, or celebrating in another way that's meaningful to you.
-
Yes. Your Reflection Journal is private and can only be viewed by you. Journal entries are never shared with your Circle.
You can revisit past journal entries at any time from the Progress tab, delete entries from a specific day, or download your journal whenever you would like to keep a personal copy.
Weekly Reflection uses your recent journal entries to identify themes and create a summary of your week. Your entries are securely retrieved from your Own Day account, and the interpretation and composition happen locally on your device. Your journal entries are not sent to an AI service for analysis.
We made a deliberate choice not to use AI for Weekly Reflection in order to keep your journal content more private. This means the reflections may be simpler than an AI-generated summary, but we believe that is a worthwhile trade-off.
-
People in your Circle can only see whether you've made progress on your daily plan and react with simple encouragement. They cannot see your Foundational Habits, Priority Actions, Journal entries, or any personal notes.
-
First, be kind to yourself.
Building new habits and changing long-established routines is difficult. Most of us genuinely want to exercise more, read more, spend time with family, or take better care of ourselves, but good intentions don't always become consistent action.
If you're finding it difficult to return to Own Day, don't try to change everything at once.
Instead, make your goal simply to return each day and set your intentions, even if you only choose one Foundational Habit or one Priority Action. The habit of pausing to ask, "What deserves my attention today?" is often the first step toward lasting change.
Many people also find it helpful to build a small daily ritual around Own Day. Try opening the app at the same point in your day, perhaps after breakfast, before starting work, or as part of your evening routine. Over time, this simple ritual can make intentional living feel more natural and sustainable.
-
That's completely normal.
Some days will go exactly as planned, while others won't. Own Day isn't about achieving perfect days, it's about making intentional choices and learning from your experience.
If an intention still matters tomorrow, simply choose it again. Every day is a fresh opportunity to decide what deserves your attention.
-
Own Day isn't designed to be a short-term challenge or a programme you complete. It's designed to be a companion that grows with you through different seasons of life.
Some habits may stay with you for years. Others will naturally evolve as your priorities change. The same is true for your Focus Areas, Rewards, and Priority Actions.
There may even be periods when life feels settled and you use Own Day less frequently. That's perfectly okay. Whenever your priorities shift, you're working toward a new goal, or you simply want to be more intentional again, Own Day will be here to help you refocus.
Our hope isn't that you become dependent on Own Day. Our hope is that it becomes a trusted companion, a place to pause, reflect, and choose what matters most each day.
-
